First Time Campers Quickly Feel Right at Home
We are happy you’ve taken some time to learn about us. As parents of three children, we understand the various emotions that come with a child’s first summer at camp. We take the responsibility of caring for your child as seriously as we would our own and focus intently on the first-time family experience.
In order to help make your child’s transition to his or her summer home a great one, we focus on four core elements:
As directors, our most important job is to know the campers. We are constantly involved in their ‘camp life’ by:
- Starting and ending each day with them at the flag pole
- Saying “good night” to each bunk before lights out
- Being an active part in daily programs and evening activities
The relationship we build with each camper and family is hugely important to us. That is why we do our best to visit with our new camp families in their home before their first summer. We also encourage families to call camp whenever they have a question.
Every detail is important to the bunk experience, the most crucial and memorable aspect of camp.
- New campers live with other new campers.
- Campers come together, enjoy camp together, and depart together.
- We unpack our younger campers’ bags and make their beds before camp begins because we want Weequahic to feel like home as soon as they arrive.
- Each new camper is carefully paired with a camp sister or brother who welcomes them into the Weequahic family.
It is not enough for our counselors to like working with kids – they have to be good at it! All staff members are required to attend a week long orientation session prior to the beginning of camp; and, before your child arrives, our Directors prepare his or her bunk counselors by personally meeting with them to review the profile information you shared with us.
- We carefully select college students to provide your child with an incredible experience.
- We surround our campers with adults who really get kids.
- Our Camp Mom is always there making sure finger nails are clipped, hair is washed, and life is good!
- Most of our counselors attend teaching programs at their colleges and aspire to enter the education field.
A lot goes into simply getting ready for camp. Here are a few ways we ease the transition process for you prior, during, and following camp.
- We’ll provide you with all necessary information - from what to pack to suggestions for easing your child’s departure.
- Our Handbook for Camp Families, which is mailed out to our families in the spring, is a wonderful resource that carefully outlines all of our camp policies and procedures.
- We notify all families when the buses arrive and call first time families with 72 hours of the start of camp to let them know how things are going.
- Pictures are posted daily, and we invite families to send emails to their campers often.
- Campers and families receive newsletters and emails throughout the year to keep them up to date with what is going on with their camp family.
Partnering with you to raise your child for a few weeks each year is a responsibility we are honored and excited to accept. Please call us at 877.899.9695 or to learn more about camp. We are happy to speak with you at anytime or schedule a visit in your home.
Thank you, again, for your interest in Weequahic. Speak with you soon!
